Although I'm not the biggest fan of Halloween, I will celebrate any holiday that involves themed reading. I've complied another list of books that are perfect to read in the month of October when the weather starts to get cooler, and you're in the mood for something a little creepy. You can see my recommendations from last year here.
Dracula, Bram Stoker I plan to read this book this month. I'm eager to meet the original Dracula that has inspired so many adaptations. What's your favorite adaption of Dracula either in movie or book form?
Frankenstein, Mary Shelley and Gris Grimly I'm also planning on reading this book this month. This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel hybrid version. It contains some of Shelley's original text as well as abridged text and beyond gorgeous illustrations by Gris Grimly.
Unnatural Creatures Stories Selected by Neil Gaiman I've been wanting to get more into short stories lately, and this collection is perfect for this time of year. I will hopefully pick up this book to read a few stories out of it every now and then this month. I have read the first story out of this book and really enjoyed it. Each story is accompanied by a beautiful illustration as well.
The Poison Eaters, Holly Black This is another short story collection, though this one is written entirely by Holly Black. I have yet to read anything by Black so This will serve as a nice introduction to her works. This collection include a story titled The Coldest Girl in Coldtown which I believe she adapted her novel of the same name from. It will be interesting to read the short story and then the novel it eventually turned in to.
Rooms by Lauren Oliver is a fairly new release and a ghost story. This books sounds very atmospheric and perfect for Fall and Halloween. Plus, look at the gorgeous cover! I hope to be picking this one up soon!
Rooms sounds like a really interesting read! I've got it on my TBR but I might see if it's going to come to my local library because I've had mixed experiences with Lauren Oliver in the past; I loved Delirium, but I really didn't like Pandemonium and Requiem. I think her narrative style would really suit a ghost story, though. :)
ReplyDeleteI read the first few pages of Delirium and thought the writing was beautiful, but that's all the experience I've had with her writing. I have heard a lot of mixed things about her books though.
DeleteI agree, I would love to see how her writing style mixes with a ghost story.
thanks for stopping by!
ooo, Rooms is one I've been eyeing. Happy reading.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds really good! And the cover is amazing!

My favorite Halloween read is Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones (Neil Gaiman is a huge fan of hers, by the way!).
ReplyDeleteOh thanks for the recommendation, I will check it out!
