Top Ten Tuesday: (Nine) Characters I Feel Pretty Ehhh About

I had a hard time coming up with this list, as I can usually connect to characters in some way or another while reading a novel. But there are some characters that I just didn't care for all that much, or didn't connect with as strongly as other characters.

1. Pudge and Alaska from Looking for Alaska by John Green
This is my least favorite Green novel. I find Pudge to be a little immature and annoying, and I really don't like Alaska, although that's not her fault since it's hard to like the Manic-Pixie-Dreamgirl.

2. Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices Trilogy by Cassandra Clare
Team Jem 4 life!

3. Jace from The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare
Jace reminds me a lot of Will, like their personalities are identical, so it's not a surprise that I'm not his biggest fan.

4. Alina from the Grisha Trilogy
This trilogy was fun and a quick read, but I wasn't blown away by it. Everything about this trilogy is a big ehh for me.

5. Twylla from the Sin Eater's Daughter
This book was another one I felt pretty ehh about. The pacing was weird, and all the action happened in the last fifty pages and left me going huh? after I finished it. I'm hoping for more character development in book number two, so I can hopefully connect to Twylla more.

6. Mary from The Agency series by Y.S. Lee
Mary was a pretty flat character for me. I was hoping for more from the first book in this series.

7.  Mim from Mosquitoland by David Arnold
I had a really hard time connecting to Mim. I don't know what it was, and I know lots of people loved this book, but I just couldn't connect and I felt a little uncomfortable with the anti-medication message in this novel.

8. Jam from Belzhar by Meg Woliter
I was really hoping to love this book because it was so heavily influenced by The Bell Jar, but it fell flat for me. The big plot twist was ridiculous, and Jam's character wasn't developed enough for my taste.

9. Tally from the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld
Another book and character I feel pretty eh about.

Leave me your link below so we can discuss characters!

  1. I have only met Jace from your list, and I don't remember not liking him--to be honest, I can barey remember him. It's been awhile since I read that first book in the series (I haven't read the others). Actually, several of the books you mention are ones I want to read. :-) I wonder what I'll think of those characters when I do read them.

    1. Yeah, I didn't find Jace to be too memorable! I have enjoyed some of these books, even though the characters weren't my favorite. Good luck!

  2. I really liked Mim in Mosquitoland, but not at first. I figured her mental illness was a barrier. Please check out My TTT

  3. This list was hard and I had to really search around for characters it seemed, because I overlook faulty characters quickly in favor of ones that I really like anyway. My TTT is a mishmash for sure.

  4. I've found this list interesting to read around the blogosphere this week! I haven't read a lot of these books, but I'm looking forward to some of them.

  5. Great list Mallory! I had to DNF Uglies when I tried reading it because I thought it was just awful. A lot of people love Scott Westerfeld, but I thought his writing was actually pretty poor and Tally was so irritating!

    1. I haven't read much by Westerfield, but he does seem to be a YA classic author.

  6. I liked Tally at first but her character went downhill for me in the second and third books.

  8. The Sin Eater's Daughter really didn't do it for me either, which was such a shame because I thought it had loads of potential.

  11. Alaska has always and will always baffle me. I agree that Pudge is immature, but he grew on me at the end of the novel.

  12. Hi Mallory! I liked the variety of your picks! Each time I read a Top 10 I'm reminded of another character that bugged me. Tally, I found, wasn't too bad in the first one, "Pretties" was ok because it showed a different world, but SPECIALS I think you would rage at, because I'd been Tally'd out by then for sure!

    1. Thanks for the warning! There are just too many books out there for me to be continuing series that I didn't love.

  13. You made the right decision by giving up on the Uglies series. At first I wasn't that annoyed by Tally but in the second book she really proved how immature and stupid she was. She also failed to make ONE decision that I could agree with. Ugh, why did I read the first three books?
Great list! (though, I love Will and kinda like Jace) :)

  14. I thought I was the only one who didn't like Will! Although I did fall for Jace and they are kind of similar, so I don't know what that says about me...
I didn't really relate to Alaska either, but I found Pudge to be an interesting character.
Great list! I'll watch out for those character in the books I haven't read.
